Great Things are Happening at JOH!!

Dear Friend of Journeys of Hope,

This year has been an exciting year for Journeys of Hope (JOH).  We continued our efforts to secure grants and successfully secured funding from the Salem Five Bank, Essex County Community Foundation, and Forest Foundation.

Our funding continued through the two fund-raising events we held during the year.  The first was an antique road show event that brought out some very interesting items that resulted in some equally surprising appraisals.

In spring we decided to host what we were hoping would become an annual JOH fund raising event.  Through the help of a volunteer event planner, who worked with several of the board members from May through October, we held our first costume gala at the Nathaniel Silsbee House on the north side of the Salem Commons.  The event was a tremendous success, which spurred us on to plan to repeat this event next October, once again on Fri, Oct 22nd, 2010, Salem’s Haunted Happening weeks.  Save the date!

During the last quarter of this year JOH received its greatest gifts

Through the assistance of Margo Casey, director of the North Shore United Way, we were put in contact with the executive director or Lynn Shelter Association, who made JOH a generous offer of space to begin its day program.  This space includes all of the amenities we need to offer the full scope of our Survival Day Program.  In conjunction with this good fortune a woman, with many years experience in working with disadvantaged youth and young adults, Gini Mazman, came forward with interest in being the executive director of the JOH program.

JOH will move into its new space on January 5, and our executive director will use the first three months of 2010 to prepare for Journeys of Hope to open its doors of its Survival Day program on April 1, 2010.

All of us at JOH are grateful during this holiday season for all of the good fortune we received during this past year and look forward with anticipation to the year ahead.

As you plan your end-of-year donations, we ask for your support as we begin our mission to serve the needs of the homeless youth and young adults from the north shore communities.  You can send a donation to: Journeys of Hope, Inc., PO Box 572, Salem, MA. 01970 or through Paypal that can be found on our website: www.journeysofhopema.org .

The members of the Board of Directors of Journeys of Hope wish you and your family the joys of this holiday season and a prosperous New Year.  We look forward to sharing the unfolding story of the Journeys of Hope program results during the upcoming months of the New Year.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays,

Sincerely,

JOH Board Members

National estimates for homeless youth are bundled together using different sources or special surveys, each with its limitations. The best estimates are as follows:

o Homeless youth between 12 to 17 years of age number in the range of 1.6 to 1.7 million youth per year. (Ringwalt, 1998).

o This estimate includes those who experience: short, unauthorized absences from home; or are throw-away youth; who are kicked out of their home for a undetermined period of time; or those who have long-term separation from their family with no hope of returning.

o A higher proportion of episodes occur among older than younger youth, because most of their episodes are short, with an eventual return home.

On any given day there is an expectation that there are approximately 300,000 to 400,000 homeless youth throughout the country. Homelessness among young adults, ages 18 to 24 years old, is recorded by the homeless assistance system that serves adults. The best source of information for this age group is the National Service of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (NSHAPC) Survey conducted in 1996. The estimates recorded by the NSHAPC are as follows:

o 18 to 19 year olds are 5% or 22,000 to 44,000 of the homeless population on a single day, or 80,000 to 170,000 over the course of a year.

o 20 to 24 year olds are 7% or 31,000 to 59,000 of the homeless population on a single day or 124,000 to 236,000 over the course of a year.

**

The State of Massachusetts HUD 2005 Study, the Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance Program, estimates the number of homeless as 14,730 individuals In all categories.

According to research conducted by the University of Massachusetts' Center on Social Policy, an estimated 28,000 unaccompanied individuals stay in emergency shelter in a given year.
*
In 2003, the average age of shelter guests was 41 years.
*
Surprisingly, 70% of the shelter guests in 2003 had high school educations or higher.
*
A significant portion of the population was working but their average income of was only $970/month.
*
Approximately 25% were struggling with mental health issues, and 30% with substance abuse.

**

9% of those served were youth (between the ages of 18 and 24 yrs).

These are the people Journeys of Hope serves.
